The Sneaky Clutter Season - Why “Just in Case” Clutter Builds So Fast

We can all relate to that moment when we look around our home and think, Where did all this clutter come from?

It is nothing to feel ashamed about. It happens to us all - even professional organizers!

I find that after busy seasons, like summer and the holidays, we are constantly running from one thing to the next, with very little buffer time between everything.

Things just accumulate because we are busy living life.

If you are in a position where you have systems and a home for everything, the reset can feel a bit easier. We set aside some time, go through the accumulated items, and put things back where they belong. As we do this, we make decisions along the way about whether we are going to keep something or not.

But what if you haven't had a chance to get those systems in place?

The thing is, taking the time to properly make decisions about your belongings - and where they will live - can help during those seasons when clutter just seems to build.

Because this is part of life.

We bring things in, and sometimes we don't move things out when needed.

Boxes are kept. Bags aren't emptied. We buy too much of one thing, then buy it again because we can't find what we already have.

Donations are gathered but never taken out,  and eventually find their way back into our homes.

And then there is the “just in case” clutter.

Just in case we need it.
Just in case we use it someday.
Just in case someone else could use it.

These things don't always feel like clutter when we bring them into our homes. But over time, they add up.

One of the biggest things I notice is that we are often really good at bringing things into our homes, but not always as good at having a plan for what leaves.

This is where simple systems can make such a difference.

Try seasonal bins that you rotate at the beginning of each season. When you switch things over, take a few minutes to declutter what you are putting away.

Move the donations out to the car.

When you come home - don't delay. Put things away.

And remember, you don't have to spend an entire weekend completely decluttering your home.

Sometimes you just need to create an exit route for the things you already know you don't need.

Your home is going to get messy. Things are going to pile up. Life is going to get busy.

That doesn't mean you are doing something wrong.

It means you live there.

The goal isn't to stop clutter from ever happening. It's to have systems that make it easier to reset when it does.
