Ask a Virtual Organizer: What do people hire virtual organizers to help with most often?
Virtual organizing is definitely a thing, and it’s becoming an increasingly popular way to help people get organized in their homes and lives.
You might be wondering, what exactly is virtual organizing? Instead of having a professional organizer work with you in person, you connect with one remotely through video calls, phone calls, emails and texts.
You, the client, do the hands-on work, while the organizer guides the process through a personalized plan, provides accountability and offers support. They are there to help you reach your goals and see the project through from start to finish.
Virtual organizing is highly effective because you can work from anywhere and at a pace that fits your lifestyle.
Curious about what people actually hire virtual organizers for? We asked professional, virtual organizers from across Canada to share the most common virtual organizing requests they receive.
Kristen, owner of KAS KONCEPTS - When a client has a project in mind - anywhere from home offices to toy rooms and storage spaces - they are usually looking for a clear roadmap to help them get started, stay motivated, and actually finish the project without feeling overwhelmed. Most people simply don’t know where to start. They want a structured plan, task assignments, accountability, deadlines and regular check-ins. Together, we get clear on the goal and come up with a realistic plan and timeline that works with their current life and schedule, ensuring we build in the time needed to see it through. Together, we break the project into manageable steps, assign priorities, set realistic deadlines and check in regularly on progress. Regular check-ins keep clients on track, and they know support and resources are available whenever needed. This method is so effective because they aren’t going through it alone, and the feeling once it is completed is incredible. It usually motivates them to maintain the space and tackle even more goals.
Caroline, owner of Mostly Organized - Digital computer cleanup is the most common request I get as an organizer offering virtual services. As every company under the sun goes digital, what was once a convenience is fast becoming an overwhelming mess on my clients’ devices. Bills, reports, estimates, and more are now sent digitally, and clients often don’t have a system to track them all. To better help my clients with these projects, we do virtual organizing sessions with screen sharing. This allows me to help create manageable systems for organizing their important files.
Marie Potter, owner of Marie Potter - One of the most common requests I receive from clients is help organizing paper. Whether it's piles of unopened mail, filing cabinets full of outdated documents, stacks of receipts or papers scattered throughout their home, paper can quickly become overwhelming.
What makes paper so challenging is that it often represents delayed decisions, unfinished tasks, and mental clutter. Virtual organizing is especially effective for paper management because clients can work directly in their systems while I guide them through sorting, categorizing and creating simple systems for managing incoming paperwork. Through video sessions, I can see what they're working with, help them make decisions, and develop systems that are easy to maintain after our sessions are complete. I also share tips and strategies to make paperwork faster and easier. Clients find as the paper piles shrink, so does their stress.
Bev Chandler, owner of C&C Organizing - Kitchen organization and setup is one of my most common virtual organizing requests. This includes improving the efficiency of an existing kitchen, or setting up a kitchen space after a move or renovation. One of the biggest areas we focus on is space and storage optimization, creating a positive impact for meal preparation and the overall enjoyment of the space.
Julie Stobbe, owner of Mind over Clutter, Time Management is one of the most common requests I receive. My clients’ busy lives leave them scrambling to keep track of everything they want to accomplish. It becomes even more difficult when the schedules of other family members and business colleagues also need to be considered. Developing checklists, creating habits and selecting the best calendar or agenda are all ways to organize their schedules and manage tasks more efficiently. Helping clients track their time allows them to see where it is “slipping” away. Once they know how to reclaim that lost time, they can choose how to use it more productively. Working together, we can reach the client’s goal of feeling less stressed and overworked, less anxious about forgetting important tasks and more confident with scheduling their time to create a lifestyle they enjoy.
This is just a small fraction of what virtual organizers are capable of helping you with. We are excellent partners in decluttering, space optimization, and creating systems and spaces that are personalized to your current season of life. There is a no one size fits-all solution, and we meet you where you are, both figuratively and literally ;)
