I’m Moving, Again… Thoughts From a Professional Organizer
I’ve always been a little in awe of people who say their parents still live in their childhood home - who can go back and sleep in the same bedroom they grew up in. That idea feels wild to me. And also incredibly comforting.
But that has never been my reality. My version of normal is movement. New homes, new cities, sometimes even new countries. Starting from scratch more times than most people can imagine. And while that might sound exhausting to some, it’s simply the life I know.
Most of my moves have felt like the next right thing. Some, especially in childhood, weren’t my choice. But once I was old enough to decide for myself, my moves were driven by school, work, and the pull of new adventures. Along the way, I realized something important: I can make almost anywhere feel like home.
Which surprises people - because despite all the moving, I’m actually a bit of a homebody.
So here I am again. Moving. And downsizing.
This move came up quickly. I have less than a month, we’re reducing our space, and honestly? I’m not overly stressed about it. The idea of moving makes me tired - because yes, it’s work - but I know I’ve got this. I like to think of myself as a bit of a master mover at this point.
Here’s how I approach it.
The very first thing I do is a brain dump. I write everything down, what needs to happen before the move and what needs to happen once we land in the new place. Getting it out of my head and onto paper instantly lightens the mental load.
From there, I move straight to my calendar. I assign deadlines, schedule tasks, and add reminders a few days in advance so nothing sneaks up on me.
Next, I put the call out to my network for boxes and supplies. Then I line up help - friends and family with trucks, I will be calling 😉. Based on what comes through, I know exactly where I need to outsource and make bookings.
Once the logistics are clear, I block time in my calendar for decluttering and packing. This is key. If it’s not scheduled, it doesn’t happen.
I always start by packing the things I know I won’t need between now and moving day. I go room by room, space by space. Everything gets labeled. No mystery boxes.
I also create clear zones: packed items we are keeping, donations, and things to sell. This keeps the spaces we’re still living in functional and calm, because life doesn’t stop just because you’re moving.
I set up mail redirection. I leave myself a note on my computer so that anytime I log into an account or open an email, I update my address right then and there. Little systems like this save so much energy.
What I’ve learned through all these moves - personally and professionally - is that the way you live before a transition determines how heavy it feels when change arrives.
One of the biggest reasons my moves are efficient isn’t because I’m “good at moving.” It’s because of the systems I’ve built into my everyday life. I know what I own. I only keep what I use. My home is already functioning well before the boxes come out.
This isn’t to make anyone feel behind or overwhelmed. I’ve lived in small spaces for a long time. There are only two of us and a cat. And yes, I run an organizing business. This is what I do. But I also see, every day, how much harder life feels for people who are managing too much, with no systems to support them.
Moving just happens to shine a very bright light on that.
The truth is, most people don’t call a professional organizer because they’re moving. They call because their home has quietly stopped supporting their life. Transitions - moves, growing families, career changes, health shifts - simply make the cracks impossible to ignore.
That’s where this work really matters.
When your home is organized in a way that reflects how you actually live, everything gets easier. Decisions take less energy. Daily tasks take less time. Big changes feel more manageable. And instead of your space being another thing you have to keep up with, it becomes something that holds you.
I’m excited about this move because I’ve been craving even more simplicity. Fewer things to manage. Less visual noise. More room - for rest, creativity, and the life happening outside my walls.
This kind of ease doesn’t happen overnight. It takes intention, support, and a clear vision of how you want to live. But it is possible.
And you don’t have to wait for a move to create it.
