January Is For Rest and Recovery - Thoughts from a Professional Organizer

January Is For Rest and Recovery

I used to feel like I had to set new goals and become the best version of myself at the beginning of every new year. Results? Always a flop. At the beginning of last year, I was run down from the busyness of all the things and had been sick on and off for about two months. I was exhausted and lacked some serious motivation to set any kind of new goals and ensure I felt fresh and ready to conquer the new year.

All of this really made me rethink how I would approach the new year moving forward and this led me to - January is for Rest and Recovery. Gone away with the guilt of doing and being new things right off the get go, and lean into a month of deep rest and relaxation.

Don’t mistaken this for being an easy road, because the guilt of being far less productive than usual crept up daily for me and it fought hard to win some days. This was a whole new practice for me and I was just figuring it out. I did my best to dig into self compassion and gave myself permission to sleep longer, have longer baths and showers, do more puzzles, listen to more music and podcasts, read more books, watch more TV and say no.

I am taking this approach again this year and I will roll with the feelings and emotions that come along with it as they come.

Some advice if you want to give my new way a try, be kind to yourself! Each day, just do what feels best for that day - maybe there are some days that you feel more motivated than others, or during certain times of day - utilize these times and then lean into the rest when you need it. Learn to listen to your body, because my crash was a result of me not listening and completely ignoring all the signals. Truth be told, this still happens plenty, just not for as long each time, and hopefully only gets better and better with practice.

Let me know how you like to approach your new year. Are you entering relaxed and fresh with goals or are you in need of some serious rest and relaxation? Or maybe even the goal is for the perfect balance of both! Whatever it is, you know what is best for you. You can’t be good for others, unless you are good for you.

📚 Here are some of the great books I’ve read recently that I highly recommend if you are a book lover and leaning into a restful January (affiliate links):

Wishing you a happy and healthy 2025! 💚
