Is Your Schedule To Full??? Thoughts from a Professional Organizer and How To Do Less
Guilty over here! Do you open your calendar and see something scheduled for every day for the rest of 2024 and beyond? How does this make you feel? Stressed, anxious, overwhelmed, exhausted? Or a nice big blend of it all? Yes, to all!
There is the part of me that likes to know all the things that are coming up so I can plan accordingly, but I still ask myself, where is the time for relaxing and doing nothing, or for spontaneity? Here is the thing, all the things that I do have scheduled are things that I love and want to do. I just know it is too full and not sustainable in the long run.
So what am I going to do about it? Here is what I have been actively doing in my calendar, to make me feel like I have some control over it:
2024 is set - I have obligations that I will fulfill. I have looked carefully at the rest of the year, and those pockets of time I do have with some space - they are now blocked for “me time” - set like work or an appointment - no exceptions. I have buffer time between things, so I have time to reset and not rush from one thing to the next. I know I don’t thrive when I have to rush!
Be sure to see if there is anything that doesn’t need to be there or can be delegated - giving lots of notice for rescheduling or canceling is OK.
2025 - I am actively starting to plan the 2025 I want, with my goals and values in alignment and top of mind - how I schedule my work, my other obligations and time for myself, family and friends. This means having a clear goal now of what I want it to look like. I know what matters to me to function best each day - a morning and night ritual, daily exercise and meal planning and prep - these are my non-negotiables - know yours.
I am trying something new for the new year ahead. Instead of looking for time to fit in rest and relaxation, fun and me time after my schedule is already full, I am putting those things in first, like right now, and scheduling my work, obligations and chores, etc. around that “me time" as best as possible. I wanted to try a new approach for the new year, because trying to fit my down-time in-between all the things isn’t working how I would like, so why not schedule it first and then fill in the time around it? I’ll let you know how this approach goes for me!
Of course, life throws us a lot of unexpected things - and these are generally out of our control. Know this will be part of life, give yourself buffer time and days, and allow for flexibility in your life, but know your boundaries. Remember, if you aren’t good, you can’t show up for others the way you want to.
P.s. Not that a planner will fix your problems, but it is a good start! I looked far and wide for my perfect fit for 2025 and this is what I went with: https://www.hemlockandoak.com/products/2025-weekly-planner?variant=45262830338292
